Thank you for your interest in the Greene County Solid Waste Management Department.
Our goal is to accept and efficiently dispose of the municipal solid waste stream, including construction and demolition debris, and to process and market the source-separated recyclables generated by the county’s residents and businesses.

Greene County Solid Waste Management held our annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection event on June 6, 2009. Many County residents took advantage of the program, which collected a substantial amount of various household hazardous wastes including paints, varnishes, solvents petroleum products, pesticides, aerosols, corrosives, mercury and antifreeze. By participating in the collection event, county residents insure that their wastes are handled safely and recycled or disposed of properly.
Each collection event requires approval from NYSDEC and the use of a fully permitted contractor for the acceptance, transportation and the recycling or disposal of the waste. Greene County has contracted with MXI Environmental Services LLC, www.mxiinc.com for these services. Before the event a site is selected based on location, how well it meets operational needs and the DEC requirements. On the day of the event the contractors arrive early and prepare the site for the safe and efficient acceptance of the waste. During the event, Solid Waste and Highway Department staff direct participants through the site and the contractor’s employees unload, classify and package the waste for transport. Generally it takes about ten minutes for a participant to go through the site. All waste is transported from the site immediately at the end of the collection. The Sherriff’s Department provides traffic control and site security.
Funding for this program is provided through Greene County’s annual budget and is eligible for a fifty percent reimbursement grant from NYSDEC. Our goal is to provide this program to county residents at least once a year. The cost for the event is determined by unit prices for the actual amount of each item collected and therefore cannot be determined until after the event is held. If sufficient funding remains available an additional event may be scheduled for fall 2009.
